The Kurdish people number around 40 million. They are considered to be the largest ethnic group in the world without a country. They recognize their homeland across Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire near the end of WWI, the 1916 Sykes Picot Agreement was set to grant the Kurds with their own territory. Three years later though, the Treaty of Lausanne signed off by the Allied Powers, dashed the Kurdish dream of independence. The agreement formed modern Turkey, establishing the borders of Syria and Iraq, and effectively divided the Kurds in four different countries. Since then the Kurds have been repressed and treated as second-class citizens in each of these states. yooo
